Hard to make out, but definitely gold! We checked a few other spots around a known pocket mine and didn't find much besides square nails and other mining junk. With a heavy bucket full of samples, backpacks, detectors, and a gallon less water, we headed back to the trucks about 6pm.
Jim found his first nugget on a hard rock mine dump near Tonopah, Nevada. For over twenty eight years he has metal detected both desert dry placer areas and hard rock gold mines. Jim is a graduate of the Mackay School of mines, University of Nevada.
October 2014 Getting started in prospecting often requires the purchase of some equipment, but one can spend as little as $10 and be finding gold or spend thousands and also be finding gold—yet you will probably have many more opportunities and possibilities with more and better equipment.
Underground hard rock mining refers to various underground mining techniques used to excavate hard minerals, usually those containing metals such as ore containing gold, silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, tin and lead, but also involves using the same techniques for excavating ores of gems such as diamonds or rubies.
Hard Rock Mining This method involves creating either open pit mines, or underground tunnels in order to access the gold in the surrounding rock. These four methods are placer mining, hard rock gold mining, byproduct mining, and finally, gold ore processing.
The main problem for individuals or small groups interested in hard rock gold deposits is the high capital costs both for the mining equipment to dig and remove the rock as well as the equipment to crush and process hard rock ore in order to extract the gold from its solid rock enclosure.
We strive to keep gold mining and rock crushing accessible for small to medium size mining operations. Small to medium size miners know that affordable production equipment, such as jaw rock crushers, hammer mills, pulverizers, portable gold processing mills are incredibly difficult to find.
Unlike placer gold hard rock or lode gold is much more expensive to locate, but under the right conditions isn't impossible. Most lode deposits are found by following placer gold deposits in a stream until the deposit suddenly chokes off then following float up hill until you finally find the Mother Lode.
Historically, hard rock gold mining has been extremely important in the USA, Australia and indeed across the world. While placer gold was man's first gold discovery and his first source of gold metal, the in place resources of the rocks have come to yield a higher production as placers are all too quickly mined out.
