El Chino Mine The El Chino (the "Chinaman") Mine is an open-pit copper mine located in the town of Santa Rita, 15 miles (24 km) east of Silver City. The huge open-pit mine was once the largest in the world and is perhaps the oldest mining site still being used in the American southwest.
The Tyrone mining district, the second largest porphyry copper deposit in New Mexico, is located 10 miles southwest of Silver City in the Burro Mountains of southwestern New Mexico (Figure 1; McLemore, 2008). Native Americans initially mined turquoise from the area around 600 AD (McLemore, 2008).
